Creation of the association for the safeguard
and the radiance of the majorelle garden In 1919
Jacques Majorelle settles in Marrakech, in 1924
he acquires a land outside of the ramparts of
the city, where he makes build his workshop in
1937. This whole will become the Majorelle
garden. Since its acquirement and its
restoration 20 years ago by Yves Saint Laurent
and Pierre Bergé, this garden also shelters an
Islamic art museum, where their personal
collection is exposed. The association for the
safeguard and the radiance of the Majorelle
garden was created on January 1st 2001, with an
aim of safeguarding the ecological, historical
and cultural inheritance that the Majorelle
garden and Islamic art museum represent |

A completely restored garden |
| |
In March 2000 Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre
Bergé decided to restore the Majorelle garden by
endowing it with important means. Thus, for 9
months some teams installed automatic irrigation
systems which allow a reduction of 40% of the
water expenses. Besides its economic and
ecological interest, this system permit to
effectively control the water distribution
according to the hours of the day and specific's
needs for each plant. To remain faithful to the
mind of Jacques Majorelle, real in love with the
exotic plants, the collection grew rich by
several rare species, several botanical
curiosities have been imported of the 5
continents. Thus, the flora of the Majorelle
garden could pass from 135 species in 1999, to
300 species on this day. |
