Fleeing the poverty into which she has sunk since becoming a widow, Rosaria abandons Calabria to settle in Milan. With her young sons, she joins the eldest, Vincenzo, who preceded them north. After many disappointments, Rosaria manages to rent a basement where she can settle with her family. Rocco and Simone, two of his sons, quickly find work and develop a passion for boxing.
