Ciné-club #8 – Lost in translation

Lost in translation, Sofia Coppola, 2003, 102 min
The film explores the improbable meeting of two Americans who find themselves on the other side of the world, immersed in a Japanese culture that is foreign to them. After The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola reaffirms her penchant for melancholic atmospheres in this poetic reflection on modern solitude and the difficulty of bonding with others. While she wrote the role especially for Bill Murray, she was inspired by the relationship between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in The Big Sleep to create the role played by Scarlett Johansson. The marvelously harmonious Murray-Johannson duo carries this luminous film, which reinvents the language of love.
