In 1863, Adèle (Isabelle Adjani) arrives in Halifax to reunite with Lieutenant Albert Pinson (Bruce Robinson), but discovers that her dream of marrying him is in jeopardy. Refusing to accept reality, she finds herself in a spiral of despair and personal difficulties. Helped by benefactors, she eventually returns to France. The film concludes with her last years in Paris, living alone until her death in 1915.
