Emerging from the woods in a bathing suit, Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) dives into the swimming pool of an elegant Connecticut home. Greeted warmly by former friends, he expresses his intention to return home by crossing a series of neighbouring pools, which he dubs the “Lucinda River” in honor of his wife. During his journey, Ned meets various residents of the county. Together, they recall shared memories, while Ned discovers differing perspectives on his past and relationships.
